Water Resources and Surface Water Hydrology
With the nation experiencing record droughts and water shortages in the western and southwestern states, efficient management of water supplies is becoming increasingly important for municipalities and water utility service providers. Riley understands how important an adequate and reliable water supply is for the socio-economic well-being and future growth of a city or town and thus, has made water resources and surface water hydrology one of its core services. Accordingly, Riley has invested the time to learn and understand surface water hydrology by earning a Ph.D. minor in Hydrology and focusing to work on projects where quantification of surface water supplies from runoff was crucial. More specifically, Riley provides the following types of services relating to water resources and surface water hydrology studies:
  • Watershed modeling and model calibration
  • Quantification of flood peaks and flood volumes
  • Evaporation and infiltration studies
  • Forecasting studies
  • Water balance studies
  • Statistical hydrology calculations
  • Water supply availability studies
  • Future urbanization/development impact studies
  • Reservoir sizing and routing studies
  • Custom hydrologic modelling building utilizing MATLAB computer programing language
Stormwater Management and Open Channel Hydraulics

As weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable and natural disasters related to flooding are on the rise, managing stormwater and floodwaters is becoming increasingly complex. The need for these types of services will only increase as municipalities and governments realize their vulnerabilities and begin to revise and amend their stormwater and flood management procedures. Riley has realized the need for the increase in these types of services and therefore offers the following relating to stormwater and open channel hydraulics:

  • Flood modeling and mapping studies (1-Dimensional and 2-Dimensional flow)
  • Stormwater Pollution and Prevention Plans (SWPPPs)
  • Channel design
  • Riprap, erosion and bank protection design
  • Reservoir spillway design
  • Flow control structure design (e.g. weirs, spillways, drop inlets, drop chutes, energy dissipaters, etc.)
  • Culvert design and analysis
  • Reservoir and channel routing
Site Civil Design

In general, site civil design services typically include all the horizontal infrastructure that must be in place prior to the construction of a building and is often performed in conjunction with a project architect. Site civil design services typically include: site soil preparation (grading), drainage away from the building, road access, parking lots, and underground utilities (e.g., water, sewer, storm drain). Riley is fully capable of providing these services and more.  More specifically, Riley’s site civil design capabilities include:

  • Preparation of site civil plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Preparation of grading and drainage plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Earthwork cut & fill volume analysis
  • Design of water, sewer, and storm drain utilities
  • Design of stormwater retention/detention ponds
  • Design of erosion protection systems
  • Diversion channel design
  • Storm peak and volume runoff calculations
  • Preparation of hydrology reports
  • Wastewater collection systems
  • Septic System design
  • Sewer lagoon design
Water Distribution System Design and Analysis
With water distribution systems (WDSs) as arguably the most critical infrastructure necessary for civilization, there will always be a need to constantly construct, maintain, repair and improve these systems. Accordingly, Riley has decided to make WDS design and analysis as one of its core services. The owner of Riley, has extensive expertise in this area with most of his graduate studies devoted to this particular area of civil engineering. This specialization in WDS differentiates Riley from most civil engineering firms. Riley can perform a wide range of engineering services relating to the design and analysis of potable and non-potable water distribution systems (WDS). Specific WDS services include:
  • System expansion and existing capacity analysis
  • Design of new water distribution networks
  • Systemwide modeling and analysis
  • Transmission system design
  • Pipe/pump design and specifications
  • Hydraulic transient/water hammer analysis
  • Storage tank sizing
  • Water quality analysis
  • Preparation of construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • System cost and energy optimization
  • Irrigation system design
  • Creation of custom modelling tools using the EPANET Programmer’s Toolkit
Mining Related Services

The owner of Riley has extensive experience in the mining industry particularly relating to grading drainage and surface stormwater management. Accordingly, Riley also offers the following services to its mining clients:

  • Reclamation contouring grading and drainage
  • Waste rock dump design and haul road access design
  • Cut/fill volume analysis
  • Preparation of stacking plans
  • Lined pond facility design
  • Stormwater pond design
  • Diversion channel design
  • Stormwater management plans
  • PLS solution system circuit design

Research and Development
Riley Engineering’s research and development capability differentiates it from most water resource engineering firms. Riley Engineering is able to develop custom hydrologic or hydraulic models to solve specific or complex problems. Research and development has included:
  • Use of Matlab to program a custom hydraulic optimization modeling software to determine least cost system designs
  • Development of a water pipe installation cost estimation model
